SPRAY FOAM INSULATION SYSTEMS

Polyurethane foam is a spray applied cellular plastic that is a highly effective insulation that can provide an air barrier and moisture barrier for roofs, attics, crawlspaces, walls, and basements. Spray foam is a two component system comprised of an “A” side consisting of Isocyanate and a “B” side which is a blend of polyol resins, blowing agents, and catalysts. When these two components are combined a chemical reaction takes place producing foam. Typical systems are 1:1 in ratio.

When the two components are processed for application they are metered to the correct ratio through a machine called a proportioner. The two components are increased in pressure, typically to 1200 PSI and heated for application, usually to 110 to 120 degrees F. The material is sent through heated hose and are kept separate until they mix in the spray gun. The mixed foam then expands on the surface it is sprayed on, sealing cracks, gaps, and voids. Both open and closed cell foam create a sealed environment and are great air barriers. Open cell foam is a very effective sound barrier and closed cell foam is used when a moisture barrier is needed. Closed cell foam will also strengthen structures.
